Frontier personal item size: will your bag fit?
Every Frontier fare includes one free personal item up to 18 × 14 × 8 inches, handles, wheels and straps included, and its size is checked at boarding. Anything bigger travels as a carry-on, which costs extra. Enter your bag to see which yours is.
Frontier personal item size
Every Frontier ticket includes one personal item per passenger in each direction. It can measure up to 18 × 14 × 8 inches, handles, wheels and straps included (Frontier also writes it as 14 inches high, 18 wide and 8 deep), and weigh up to 35 lb. It must fit under the seat in front of you. Frontier’s examples are purses, totes, small backpacks and kids’ backpacks, laptop or computer bags, and briefcases.
The size of your personal item is checked during boarding, and a bag larger than the limit is subject to an additional charge. Soft bags grow when they’re full, so measure yours packed.
Frontier carry-on size and price
A carry-on can measure up to 24 × 16 × 10 inches, handles, wheels and straps included, and weigh up to 35 lb. It has to fit in the overhead bin; if the bins are full, it may be checked at the gate at no extra cost. Frontier’s examples are large backpacks, small duffel bags and small wheeled suitcases.
Unlike the personal item, a carry-on costs extra. The price depends on your travel dates and when you buy it, and Frontier says prices at the airport are higher, so add it when you book or later in My Trips on Frontier’s site. Board First, sold with a carry-on, puts you in Group 1 with guaranteed overhead bin space.
Some fares and members get a carry-on included:
- Economy bundle: personal item and carry-on
- Premium bundle: personal item, carry-on and Board First
- Business bundle: personal item, carry-on and two checked bags of up to 50 lb each
- Elite status: a carry-on with Gold (for the member only), Platinum and Diamond
Coats, canes, crutches, portable oxygen concentrators, respiratory devices and other assistive devices come on board without a carry-on charge. Medical devices, wheelchairs and essential baby gear can be carried or checked free and don’t count toward your allowance.
Checked bags on Frontier
A checked bag can measure up to 62 inches (length + width + depth, handles, wheels and straps included) and weigh up to 40 lb. Heavier and bigger bags cost more, per bag and per direction:

| 41–50 lb | $75 |

| 63–110 linear inches | $75 |
| Over 110 linear inches | Not accepted |

Questions
What is Frontier’s personal item size?
18 × 14 × 8 inches (Frontier also writes it 14 inches high, 18 wide and 8 deep), handles, wheels and straps included. It may weigh up to 35 lb and must fit under the seat in front of you. Every ticket includes one personal item per passenger, each way.
Is a backpack a personal item on Frontier?
Yes, if it fits within 18 × 14 × 8 inches: Frontier lists small backpacks and kids’ backpacks as personal items. Large backpacks count as carry-ons.
What happens if my personal item is too big on Frontier?
Frontier checks the size during boarding, and items larger than 18 × 14 × 8 inches are subject to an additional charge. Frontier says bag prices are higher at the airport, so if your bag is bigger, add a carry-on when you book or before you fly.
Does Frontier charge for carry-on bags?
Yes, unless your fare bundle or Elite status includes one: the Economy, Premium and Business bundles all do, as do Elite Gold, Platinum and Diamond. The price depends on your travel dates and when you buy it.
Is there a weight limit for Frontier personal items?
Yes: up to 35 lb, the same as a carry-on. Checked bags may weigh up to 40 lb before overweight fees apply.
